Italian football has a reputation for being defensive. That was fair twenty years ago and is less true now. Serie A games produce more goals than they used to, and several clubs press high and attack with their full-backs. What hasn't changed is how well organised most teams are. Even the sides near the bottom are hard to beat by a big margin.
This page lists our Serie A tips for the next round and, above, every recent tip with its final score.
What we look for in Serie A games
- Home and away form separately. Some Italian sides are a different team at home, especially in the south.
- Suspensions. Serie A referees show a lot of yellow cards, so bans pile up and change line-ups more than in most leagues.
- The coach. Coaching changes are common in Italy. A new coach often brings a short bounce in results before things settle.
- Europe. Clubs in the Champions League or Europa League rotate in the league, mostly on the weekend after a European away trip.
Why we lean on double chance
Because the gap between teams is small and draws are common, a straight win tip in Serie A carries more risk than the odds suggest. Taking 1X or X2 costs a bit of price but covers the draw, which happens a lot in Italy. Most picks you'll see here sit between 1.15 and 1.40 for that reason.
Big games are another case. When two top sides meet, the match is often cagey for long spells. We generally avoid over 2.5 goals in those and look at double chance on the side in better form.
Using the table and results
The Serie A table on this page updates through the day. Look at goal difference as well as points: a side with lots of points and a small goal difference has been winning tight games, and that kind of luck tends to run out. The league tables page also has the top scorers for Italy and four other leagues.
