Form guide

Atlético Madrid are on a run that suits them perfectly: six games unbeaten, four of them without conceding. In La Liga they’ve won 2-1 at Alavés, 1-0 at Espanyol, 1-0 against Deportivo and 2-0 at Levante. In Europe they beat Manchester United 2-0 here and drew 1-1 in Stuttgart, after losing 2-1 on the opening night. It isn’t spectacular, with four goals in three Champions League games, but it’s exactly how Atlético like to win.

Bayern are almost the opposite. They score freely, with Harry Kane already on four Champions League goals, a 5-0 win over Bodø/Glimt and a 6-1 thrashing of RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga. But four of their last six games have been draws: 2-2 at Augsburg, a wild 3-3 at Viking, 2-2 against Arsenal and 2-2 at home to Dortmund on Saturday. They’ve conceded in each of their last six games, and that is a problem away at Atlético.

Head-to-head

These two have history. Bayern won the 1974 European Cup final after a replay, 4-0, following a 1-1 draw. Atlético knocked Bayern out of the 2016 semi-finals on away goals (1-0 in Madrid, 2-1 to Bayern in Munich), and the clubs traded 1-0 home wins in the 2016-17 group stage. Their most recent meetings, in 2020, ended 4-0 to Bayern in Munich and 1-1 in Madrid. In Madrid, Bayern haven’t found it easy.

How the game could go

Expect Bayern to have most of the ball and Atlético to be happy about it. Atlético have spent years being at their best without possession, sitting compact and waiting for a mistake or a set piece. Bayern’s habit of leaving gaps this season is exactly what Atlético feed on.

That doesn’t mean Bayern can’t hurt them: Kane is in form, and Bayern have scored at least twice in each of their last six games. A goal for them is likely. But we’d be surprised to see the game open up the way Bayern’s draws with Viking and Dortmund did, and the home side losing would go against everything their recent form says.

Team news

Atlético Madrid: the news is mostly good for the home side. Koke (thigh) and Johnny Cardoso (muscle) are both back in training, although neither is certain to make the squad. There are no other major absences, so Atlético should be close to full strength.

Bayern Munich: Bayern’s list is much longer. Serge Gnabry hurt his thigh in Saturday’s 2-2 with Dortmund and won’t travel to Madrid, and Ismael Saibari has had surgery on an ankle ligament he tore in the same game and is out for several weeks. They join Jamal Musiala (thigh), Luis Díaz (hamstring) and Bara Ndiaye on the sidelines. Michael Olise is a doubt with a knee problem.

There’s a question in goal too. Manuel Neuer (foot) is unlikely to be fit, and his stand-in Jonas Urbig took a blow to the head against Dortmund; Bayern are watching him for signs of concussion. Losing Musiala, Díaz, Gnabry and possibly Olise takes a lot of creativity away from Harry Kane, which makes us more comfortable backing Atlético not to lose.

Confirmed line-ups are released about an hour before kick-off.

Our prediction and tips

  • Main tip: Atlético win or draw (1X). Six unbeaten and four clean sheets, against a Bayern side that keeps drawing.
  • Goals: Under 3.5. Atlético’s games rarely get wild, and they’ve conceded once in their last five.
  • Correct score: 1-1, with 1-0 to Atlético as the alternative. Correct scores are long shots, so keep stakes small.
