Asian handicap looks complicated at first: -0.25, +1, -1.75. But the idea behind it is simple. One team gets a head start (or a deficit) in goals, so that the bet is closer to an even contest and the draw is removed or reduced. This guide explains Asian handicap simply, line by line, with tables showing exactly what wins, what loses and what gets refunded.
The idea behind Asian handicap
In a normal 1X2 bet there are three outcomes. Asian handicap removes the draw by giving one team a handicap in goals. You then add the handicap to that team’s score and see who “wins” the adjusted result. The market started in Asia and is now offered by most bookmakers; Wikipedia’s Asian handicap article covers its history.
Level ball (0)
No head start. If your team wins, you win; if it draws, your stake is refunded; if it loses, you lose. This is exactly the same as draw no bet.
Half-goal lines: -0.5 and +0.5
| Bet | Win | Draw | Loss |
|---|---|---|---|
| Team -0.5 | Wins | Loses | Loses |
| Team +0.5 | Wins | Wins | Loses |
-0.5 is the same as a straight win. +0.5 is the same as double chance on that team.
Whole-goal lines: -1 and +1
| Bet | Wins by 2+ | Wins by 1 | Draw | Loses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Team -1 | Wins | Refund | Loses | Loses |
| Team +1 | Wins | Wins | Wins | Refund if by 1, loses if by 2+ |
Whole-goal lines can end in a refund (a “push”) when the adjusted score is level.
One-and-a-half lines: -1.5 and +1.5
| Bet | Wins by 2+ | Wins by 1 | Draw | Loses by 1 | Loses by 2+ |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Team -1.5 | Wins | Loses | Loses | Loses | Loses |
| Team +1.5 | Wins | Wins | Wins | Wins | Loses |
-1.5 means your team must win by two or more. +1.5 means your team can lose by one and you still win.
Quarter-goal lines: -0.25, -0.75 and others
Quarter lines confuse almost everyone, but there’s a simple rule: your stake is split in half across the two nearest lines.
- -0.25 = half on 0 (level ball) and half on -0.5.
- -0.75 = half on -0.5 and half on -1.
- +0.25 = half on 0 and half on +0.5.
| ₦1,000 on Team -0.25 | Result |
|---|---|
| Team wins | Both halves win: full win |
| Draw | Half refunded (level ball), half lost (-0.5): you lose ₦500 |
| Team loses | Both halves lose |
| ₦1,000 on Team -0.75 | Result |
|---|---|
| Wins by 2+ | Both halves win: full win |
| Wins by 1 | Half wins (-0.5), half refunded (-1): half win |
| Draw or loss | Both halves lose |
Why bettors like Asian handicap
- Better value on favourites. Instead of backing a big favourite at 1.20, you can back it at -1.5 for around 2.00 if you expect a comfortable win.
- Protection on underdogs. +0.5 or +1 lets you back an underdog not to lose heavily.
- Lower margins. Bookmakers often price Asian handicaps with smaller margins than 1X2. Our guide to reading football odds explains margins.
Common mistakes
- Confusing -1 with -1.5. A one-goal win is a refund on -1, but a loss on -1.5.
- Forgetting that quarter lines split your stake.
- Using big handicaps on favourites who often win by one goal. Check their recent winning margins first, using the kind of numbers in our football statistics for betting guide.
Asian handicap and our tips
Our tips use standard markets, but many of them translate directly: a home win tip is the same as home -0.5, and a 1X double chance tip is home +0.5. If you understand the lines above, you can choose the version that gives you the best odds at your bookmaker. Stake sensibly and read our responsible gambling page if you need to.
