Manchester United welcome Roma to Old Trafford on Tuesday 3 November with their season in a hole: no win in six games, and four defeats among them. Roma, meanwhile, have scored 12 goals in their last three. Our Manchester United vs Roma prediction looks at why the visitors deserve to be taken seriously, even at Old Trafford.

A bad run for United
It started well enough: United opened their Champions League campaign with a 4-0 win over Sabah. Since then, almost nothing has gone right. They lost 2-0 in Madrid to Atlético, were beaten 4-1 by Como in Italy, and in the Premier League have drawn 1-1 with Tottenham and Leeds before losing 3-0 at home to Bournemouth and 2-0 at Chelsea on Saturday.
The worrying number isn’t just the results. United have scored three goals in their last six games, and haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of them. A home crowd helps, but confidence is clearly low.
Roma are flying
Roma arrive in the opposite frame of mind. They beat Genoa 2-0, Cagliari 4-2 and Udinese 5-2 away on Saturday, and drew 3-3 at Napoli in between. In Europe they drew 1-1 at Fenerbahçe, lost a 4-3 thriller to Real Madrid and then beat Slovan Bratislava 4-0. Donyell Malen already has three Champions League goals.
If there’s a weakness, it’s at the back: Roma have conceded in four of their last six. So this is a team that scores a lot and gives a little back, which is why we expect goals.
Head-to-head
These clubs have produced some famous nights. United won 7-1 at Old Trafford in the 2007 quarter-finals after losing the first leg 2-1 in Rome, and beat Roma again in the 2008 quarter-finals. Their most recent meeting was the 2021 Europa League semi-final, which United won 6-2 at home before losing 3-2 in Rome. Old Trafford history is on United’s side, but history won’t score goals on Tuesday.
How the game could go
United will want to start fast and get the crowd behind them. The danger is what happens if they don’t: Roma move the ball quickly and have players who punish loose passes, and United have conceded in every one of their last six games.
We think Roma are at least as likely to win this as United, and a draw would be no surprise. What we’d be surprised by is a goalless game, with Roma scoring so freely and United struggling to keep clean sheets.
Team news
Manchester United: United are still without Benjamin Šeško, whose shin injury has turned out to be more serious than first thought and is expected to keep him out until the new year. Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu are also missing, while Marcus Rashford (hip) and Amad will be assessed before kick-off. Lisandro Martínez was sent off at Chelsea, but that ban only applies in the Premier League, so he can play here. Bryan Mbeumo is likely to lead the line again.
Roma: Roma have no new injury worries, but five players are still out: Paulo Dybala (calf), Manu Koné (thigh), Lorenzo Pellegrini, Muhammed Bah and goalkeeper Mile Svilar, who has a broken toe. Pierluigi Gollini is expected to start in goal, and Donyell Malen, with three goals in the competition, should lead the attack.
Svilar’s absence is a real blow for Roma and one more reason we expect goals at both ends. United’s missing forwards are why we don’t trust them to win.
Official line-ups are confirmed about an hour before kick-off.
Our prediction and tips
- Main tip: Roma win or draw (X2). Roma’s form is far better, and United haven’t won in six.
- Goals: Over 1.5. Roma have scored at least two goals in each of their last six games.
- Correct score: Manchester United 1-2 Roma, with 1-1 as the alternative. Keep correct-score stakes small.
